WILDLIFE WARRIORS: IT'S TIME - JOHN WILLIAMSON - ALBUM NOTES AND LYRICS
TRUE BLUE
Version 4: Steve Irwin Memorial

By John Williamson

Hey True Blue
Don't say you've gone
Say you've knocked off for a smoko
And you'll be back later on
Hey True Blue

True Blue
Give it to me straight
Face to face
Are you really disappearing
Just another dying race
Hey True Blue

Chorus:
True Blue
Is it me and you
Is it Mum and Dad
Is it a cockatoo
Is it standing by your mate
When he's in a fight
Or will she be right
True Blue
I'm asking you
Hey True Blue
Can you bear the load
Will you tie it up with wire
Just to keep the show on the road
Hey True Blue

Hey True Blue
Now be fair dinkum
Is your heart still there
If they sell us out like sponge cake
Do you really care
Hey True Blue

True Blue
Is it me and you
Is it Mum and Dad
Is it a cockatoo
Is it standing by your mate
When she's in a fight
Or will she be right
True Blue
I'm asking you

True Blue
Is it me and you
Is it Mum and Dad
Is it Steve Irwin too
Is it standing by your mate
When he's in a fight
Or will she be right
True Blue
True Blue

HOME AMONG THE GUM TREES
and TRUE BLUE (2006)

"These two tracks are in fact taken from the recording of Steve Irwin's Memorial Service at the Crocoseum in Queensland.

When I listen to these songs it all comes back to me. The 5,000 strong Crocodile Hunter fans who lined up for hours to be there, for Steve. The tears flowed like a river all round. Even the policemen were wiping their eyes. 'Home Among the Gum Trees' was a welcome relief for all of us. Just a moment to celebrate Australia and catch our breath before the real 'wammie' came. That is, when Brian (the bloke who tried to save Steve's life in the ocean) loaded up his old Ute and drove off to me singing 'True Blue'.

The only reason I kept it together was the fact that I was singing for Terri, Bindi and little Bob and the Grandparents. Also, I felt I had to be strong for Steve's mates who were all lined up in their khakis.

Thankfully, I had already seen the emotional footage of Steve at rehearsals so I learned not to listen or look at what was being shown.

Steve and I had a lot in common and our friendship was growing. As long as Terri wants me to sing at the Zoo on Australia Day I'll be there. His message must not die."
